Social media speaker: e-Governance Conference 2020

I love any opportunity to be a social media keynote speaker, conference facilitator or panellist to share the real value of social media. However, I felt extremely grateful for the opportunity to present to a global audience as part of the e-Governance Academy‘s 2020 Conference for the public sector.

More than 1,000 virtual delegates from 130 countries around the world tuned in to hear from an incredible line up of speakers, including President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid and a wide range of digital government ministers collectively exploring the role of citizens and digital transformation within government.

Invited as the only social media speaker (and Australian!), I took the opportunity to share how Australian government agencies are using social media to fix the problems that matter to citizens. And how all agencies can better align with citizen expectations, even in the thick of a crisis like COVID-19.

I’ve included a few thought starters from the presentation below:

  • Social media is a critical factor in successful government digital transformation – you can’t transform without citizen input.
  • Effective government use of social media has less to do with you and more to do with them – your citizens.
  • With various isolation and public restriction measures, platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp and Weibo saw exponential growth in citizen usage during the early stages of COVID-19.
  • Citizens want to be able to reach government agencies on social media – being present and responsive is what will build and sustain their trust.
  • Citizen voices, opinions and ideas are a critical factor to help your government agency successfully navigate its own digital transformation journey.
  • Social media are just the channels citizens use to connect and communicate. But it is those conversations that provide information. And with information, insight. And with insight, the ability to take faster, smarter actions within government.

Please feel free to drop me a note if you’re interested in the full presentation and related case studies.
